Overview

The Adult Catheterization Unit provides advanced diagnostic and interventional cardiac care for adult patients with coronary artery disease and structural heart disease, including adult congenital heart diseases. The unit serves as a cornerstone for minimally invasive procedures, avoiding the need for open-heart surgery whenever possible.

Scope of the Unit

The Adult Cardiac Catheterization Unit specializes in the evaluation and management of patients presenting with chest pain, acute coronary syndromes, valvular heart disease, and adult congenital heart defects. Utilizing the latest technologies, the team performs advanced diagnostic imaging and interventional procedures to restore normal cardiac function.

Diagnostic Catheterization:
Coronary angiography, hemodynamic studies, intravascular imaging (IVUS, OCT), and fractional flow reserve (FFR) assessment.

Interventional Cardiology:
Balloon angioplasty, implantation of drug-eluting stents, drug-eluting balloons, management of chronic total occlusions (CTO), complex high-risk indicated procedures (CHIP), and advanced plaque modification techniques for calcified lesions, including rotational atherectomy (rotablation) and shockwave intravascular lithotripsy.

Structural Heart Procedures:
Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), paravalvular leak (PVL) closure, and septal reduction procedures for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM).

Adult Congenital Heart Disease Interventions:
Closure of defects such as atrial septal defects (ASD/PFO), ventricular septal defects (VSD), and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA); catheter-based stenting for aortic coarctation; balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty for pulmonary valve stenosis; and transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation in cases of pulmonary regurgitation.

Cardiac Care Unit:
Provision of emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI – primary PCI) and high-risk NSTEMI cases, intra-procedural monitoring, and post-intervention follow-up to ensure optimal recovery.

What we treat

Adult Cath (Adults – Heart & Vascular Procedures)

We help adults who have problems with their heart arteries, heart valves, or blood vessels in the body. Conditions include:

  • Blocked or narrowed heart arteries (which can cause chest pain or heart attacks)
  • Valve problems (such as valves that are too tight or that leak)
  • Weak heart pumping or heart failure needing support with devices
  • Aneurysms of the aorta (bulges in large blood vessels)
  • Poor circulation in arms or legs
  • Carotid artery disease or blocked neck vessels that increase stroke risk
  • Blood clots in the body or brain
  • Chronic total occlusions (fully blocked arteries)
  • Fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion)
