The Pediatric Surgical Unit specializes in the surgical treatment of complex congenital and acquired gastrointestinal conditions in children. The unit offers advanced reconstructive and corrective procedures, supported by pediatric anesthesia and intensive care services, ensuring safe, age-appropriate surgical care and comprehensive postoperative follow-up.
Scope of the Unit
The Pediatric Surgical Unit provides operative care for congenital anomalies and acquired gastrointestinal conditions in young patients. Its scope includes reconstructive and corrective interventions, tumor removal, and management of complex abdominal abnormalities, delivered alongside specialized pediatric anesthesia, neonatal and pediatric intensive care, and structured recovery programs.
What we treat
Advanced pediatric surgical care for complex gastrointestinal and abdominal conditions, combining precision techniques with comprehensive perioperative support.
Pediatric surgery encompasses a wide range of specialized procedures. Congenital and neonatal surgery includes correction of gut malrotation and volvulus, repair of tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) and esophageal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia repair, Kasai portoenterostomy for biliary atresia, management of neonatal intestinal atresias (duodenal, jejunoileal, and colonic), closure of gastroschisis and omphalocele, and pyloromyotomy for neonatal pyloric stenosis.
In the field of anorectal and colorectal surgery, procedures such as posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP), anoplasty for low anorectal malformations, rectal biopsies and pull-through procedures for Hirschsprung’s disease, colorectal resections with re-anastomosis, and the management of cloacal malformations are performed. Esophageal and upper gastrointestinal surgery involves esophagectomy with replacement techniques (gastric pull-up, colon interposition), fundoplication for severe reflux, Heller myotomy for achalasia, and hiatal hernia repair.
Gastric, intestinal, and advanced colorectal surgery covers partial or total colectomy, small bowel resections with anastomoses, bowel lengthening procedures (such as STEP and LILT) for short bowel syndrome, intestinal stoma creation and closure, and management of complex adhesive intestinal obstruction.
In the area of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, key interventions include the pediatric Whipple’s procedure, liver resections for tumors or congenital lesions, pancreatic tumor resections, biliary and pancreatic duct reconstruction, and choledochal cyst excision.
Pediatric oncologic and solid organ surgery addresses the resection of abdominal wall tumors, Wilms’ tumor, and neuroblastoma, along with splenectomy for trauma or hematological disease, adrenalectomy for tumors or congenital hyperplasia, and surgery for renal tumors.
Finally, general pediatric surgery involves procedures such as inguinal and umbilical hernia repair, hydrocele correction, orchidopexy for undescended testes, appendectomy, and abdominal wall reconstruction.
